RuggedCom Receives Frost & Sullivan
Excellence in Technology Award

for the RuggedSwitch™ Ethernet Switches

Frost and Sullivan Excellence in Technology Award

RuggedCom is pleased to announce that we are the recipient of the Frost and Sullivan Excellence in Technology Award in the field of Ethernet switches for substation automation. This award is bestowed on companies that have pioneered the development and introduction of innovative technologies into the market, and recognizes RuggedCom for its technology leadership role in substation hardened Ethernet devices – products that are designed specifically for the electric utility market.

The criteria for this award is based on a number of factors including:

  • number of new technologies developed or introduced
  • significance of a technology/technologies in the industry
  • competitive advantage of technologies vis-a-vis competing technologies
  • ease of adoption
  • potential to become an industry standard

RuggedCom is also prominently featured in Frost and Sullivan's research service on "Global Developments in Substation Automation". The research states that “[RuggedCom] has the largest installed base of Ethernet switches in the utility market worldwide”, and is one of the preferred suppliers for IEC 61850 substation implementations for Siemens.

Tennessee Department of Transportation Uses RuggedCom as Part of the SmartWay Program

Tennessee Department of Transportation Uses RuggedCom as Part of the SmartWay Program

The highways throughout the Chattanooga area have been experiencing increased traffic congestion over the past couple of years. To help alleviate this situation, reduce travel time, increase safety, and improve emergency response, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is deploying its SmartWay program. SmartWay uses cameras to monitor the highways from Traffic Management Centers (TMC), uses sensors to gauge traffic flow, and uses large electronic message boards to send urgent traffic notices to drivers along the highways.

To ensure reliable operation of the entire network, RuggedCom was selected by MasTec, a leading specialty contractor for communications infrastructure and the prime contractor for the project, to provide the network infrastructure products for use within the roadside traffic control cabinet at each camera location.

Wave-Farm Power Generation Application
RuggedCom Ethernet Switches Used in Novel Wave-Farm Power Generation Application

Ocean Power Delivery (OPD) is building the world’s first commercial wave-farm to generate renewable electricity from ocean waves off the coast of Portugal. When complete, this 22.5MW project is expected to meet the average electricity demand of more than 15,000 Portuguese households and displace more than 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission per year from conventional generating plants.

The RuggedSwitch™ RS900 was selected to provide the communications backbone for the sophisticated automation system that controls the operation of the entire structure. Since these switches are located directly on the cylindrical structure, the ability to withstand “harsh” environments, including wide temperature variations and vibration, is a key requirement.

Product Focus

RuggedServer™ RS416
Modular Serial Device Server with Integrated
Managed Ethernet Switch

RuggedServer™ RS416
  • Modular design – 4, 8, 12, or 16 serial ports (RS485/RS422/RS232)
  • 2 or 4 Ethernet ports (copper and/or fiber)
  • Transmit serial data over an IP network
  • “Network enable” legacy serial devices
  • Supports Modbus, DNP and other serial protocols

The RuggedServer™ RS416 is an industrially hardened serial device server with an integrated, fully managed, Ethernet switch, designed to operate reliably in electrically harsh and climatically demanding environments. Featuring a modular design that can support up to 16 serial ports and up to 4 Ethernet ports, the RS416 is able to interconnect multiple types of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) that have different methods of communications. Using the RS416 results in fewer connectivity devices (which reduces overall system costs) and also extends the useful life of existing legacy IEDs (which minimizes capital expenditure for new equipment).

RuggedServer™ RS401
4-Port Serial Device Server
with Integrated 4-Port Managed
Ethernet Switch

RuggedServer™ RS401
  • Transmit serial data over an IP network
  • “Network enable” legacy serial devices
  • RuggedRated™ for harsh environments
  • RS485/RS422/RS232 serial ports
  • Based on the popular RuggedServer™ RS400

The RuggedServer™ RS401 is an industrially hardened, serial device server with an integrated, fully managed Ethernet switch, designed to operate reliably in electrically harsh and climatically demanding environments. Based on the popular RuggedServer™ RS400, the RS401 includes all the same functionality such as an integrated 4 port serial server, a 4 port managed Ethernet switch, and optional v.90 modem. In addition, the RS401 features a more compact design that is particularly suited for panel mount locations or installations with tight space restrictions. The RS401 is an ideal device to connect and “IP-enable” legacy serial devices or IEDs for Ethernet network connectivity.

RuggedCom Hosts First Global Sales and Partner Meeting

RuggedCom Hosts First Global Sales and
Partner Meeting

RuggedCom was proud to host our first Global Sales and Partner Meeting in September 2006, in Toronto, Canada. Our channel partners and regional sales managers from around the world came to listen and learn about our new product and service offerings and future direction of the company.

Marzio Pozzuoli kicked off the meeting with his “State of the Union” address, followed by presentations on applications/case studies, marketing initiatives, product road maps, intermixed with product training. Some of the feedback from our channel partners included:

“Dynamic, good flow, informative, no information overload”
“Content was excellent – both in time spent and info covered”

Our channel partners also had the opportunity to tour RuggedCom’s new corporate and manufacturing facilities and came away impressed and energized about the current state and future prospects for RuggedCom.

It was an exceptional turn-out with over 70 people and representation from all the continents of the world (except for Antartica!). With such a great turnout and feedback, RuggedCom will continue this annual event well into the future. If you are a channel partner and you missed this year’s event, make sure you mark your calendar for September 2007!
