City of Auburn Washington to Deploy RuggedSwitch™ RS900 as part of its Advanced Traffic Management System
Objective
Optimize and improve traffic volumes in the downtown corridor during morning & evening commutes, and during special events.
Solution
Advanced Traffic Management System utilizing the RuggedSwitch™ RS900 as the Ethernet communication fiber backbone connecting each intersection to a central control room.
Customer Requirements
When the City of Auburn Washington needed to optimize and improve traffic volumes through the downtown corridor they looked to RuggedCom and Econolite to supply an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). Responding to concerns from the City and Council members about the traffic impact to the driving public along Auburn Way South (especially during the heavy morning and evening commutes and special events at the White River Amphitheater), the Public Works department set out to deploy an ATMS at 11 intersections, with future expansion to 23.
The ATMS will use Econolite AS controllers with the RuggedCom RuggedSwitch™ RS900 as the Ethernet communication fiber backbone. The system will provide a centralized integrated platform for traffic signal system control, information management, graphical HMI display, and real-time video of the conditions at each intersection. The ATMS will be remotely accessible and will be monitored by the City of Auburn Public Works, Washington State DOT, and King County DOT. The City of Auburn's system will be complete and operational in 2006 and will include a transportation management centre, synchronized signals, and state-of-the-art traffic cameras along S. 277th St. and Auburn Way North.
The RS900 is ideally suited to provide the communication network fiber backbone for ATMS applications. Key features include NEMA TS-2 certification, long haul fiber support, rugged construction suitable for outdoor applications, wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), less than 5ms network fault recovery, and high immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Also, RuggedCom's advanced network management features allow for reliable and fast transmission of video and data over IP throughout the network and into the control room.
The completed ATMS system will be instrumental in allowing Public Works staff to make real time changes to traffic signal timing based on observed traffic volumes through the installed cameras. The result of which will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increased public safety.
