Customer Requirements

Vyyo Inc., a global supplier of wireless broadband network solutions for the utility market, offers solutions that enable utilities to operate secure wireless networks to their remote assets for communications and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications. As part of the their solution, Vyyo requires communication infrastructure products that can seamlessly integrate to new and legacy equipment for Automated Meter Reading, Demand Management, Distribution Automation, and Equipment Monitoring. These products, in turn, must work in conjunction with Vyyo’s high-speed, real-time connectivity broadband wireless solution.

Vyyo has chosen and certified the RuggedServer™ RS400 to provide the necessary device interconnectivity within the utility substation. Featuring an integrated 4 port serial server and 4 port managed Ethernet switch, the RS400 is able to interconnect multiple types of IEDs that have different methods of communications. Using the RS400 results in fewer connectivity devices (which reduces overall system costs) and also extends the useful life of existing legacy IEDs (which minimizes capital expenditure for new equipment).

The RS400 is also RuggedRated™ and has been specifically designed to withstand the demands of harsh substation environments, including high EMI interference and wide temperature fluctuations. By meeting or exceeding IEC61850-3 and IEEE 1613 specifications, and combined with an industrially rated integrated power supply and rugged construction, the RS400 is ideally suited for the electric utility industry where high reliability and availability are of critical importance.
